Starburst Gymnastics for Preschoolers:
acquiring learning skills for life

Call us! (209) 549-1919

As parents and teachers, it is important to remember, forming your child's attitude toward learning is best done in their preschool years. Turning back the clock to teach learning attitudes during their teenage years is extremely difficult if not impossible. We believe the learning attitude your child acquires in our Starburst program is exceptionally valuable to their future.

Child Development experts know; for preschoolers, acquiring a healthy learning attitude is far more important than the mastery of specific skills. Please compare: GymStars' StarBurst Gymnastics curriculum is carefully designed for exactly what children need most during these formative years. Gymnastics skills are used as tools to teach learning attitudes while skill mastery is a secondary goal of the StarBurst program.

FUN is far more than meets the eye! hanging One of the objectives of StarBurst is FUN! Of course, this is cool with the kids, but as parents, we sometimes fail to realize the importance of fun in a learning setting, especially for preschoolers. Adults often feel that when fun is present, learning is not. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Why is fun so important? All well-adjusted, life-long learners at some point during their formative years formed a subconscious association when presented with a learning situation approximating: Challenge = Risk = Learning = fun & excitement!

In other words, a challenge is worthy of my best effort in and of itself. The value of this association becomes even more apparent when inspecting the opposite association that is prevalent in today's teenagers and young adults: Challenge = risk = failure = fear & anxiety. For a person possessing this negative association the pain of possible failure is simply not worth the risk.

This person then learns to insulate themselves from their fear and anxiety by creative, clever excuses and displaying apathetic attitudes about "trying" such as: "who cares?" or, "why should I even bother to try, I'll never be able to get it anyway". O.K...now that you know a little more about the substance of StarBurst gymnastics we have a favor to ask. SHHHH!...Don't tell the kids: They think StarBurst gymnastics is just pure FUN!

The GymStars Starburst Gymnastics program provides for six age groupings.

We divide our Starburst program into six distinctive age groupings to provide your child with a successful learning environment through each stage of their development.

Baby's first steps through 19 months

A 45 minute parent involvement class where your child will enjoy climbing in, out, up, down, over, around, and through to develop muscle control, hand eye coordination and socialization skills, while having a ton of fun. This loosely structured, exploratory class will use the event of the week to introduce your children to beginning gymnastics.

19 through 24 months

A parent-child interactive 45 minute class. Instructors guide parents, who in turn assist their child while they experiment with basic gymnastics skills using obstacle courses, beams, bars, trampoline, tumbling, music, swings, ladders, tunnels and more. Group games, provide the social component of interacting with other children which is invaluable. Designed as a traditional class, this group is being prepared to move into the StarLites class.

2 yrs.

A 45 minute parent involvement class where the children learn age appropriate gymnastics skills incorporating vault, bars, beam, floor, trampoline and swing . Parents help the children through exciting and challenging activities which help your child's motor and sensory skill development.

3 yrs.

No parents needed here! Imaginations soar pretending there are mountains to climb, rivers to swim, canyons to jump and vines to swing on, teaching kids that a challenge is fun. More physically challenging skills give kids stronger bodies and sharper minds as well as a clearer understanding of their bodies capabilities and limitations. Age appropriate gymnastics skills are taught on the vault, bars, beam, floor, trampoline and swing.

Shooting Stars:
4 yrs.

A 60 minute class that continues to build beginning gymnastics skills on the vault, bars, beam, floor, trampoline and swing. Side skills are used to teach students a strong independent work ethic. Children also learn that learning is fun, exciting and rewarding.

Shining Stars:
5 yrs.

A 60 minute class which is strongly skill based using vault, bars, beam and floor. Shining Stars prepares each child, physically and mentally, for the higher skill levels. Two events of the class are conducted in the StarBurst gym and the other two events are taught in the Rising Star gym preparing them for their grand promotion into the Rising Star Program.

What should my child wear?

A leotard or a one piece bathing suit is preferable for their safety. A t-shirt and active wear shorts are OK. Boys wear active wear shorts and a t-shirt. Children will be bare footed in class. Hair should be pulled back in a pony tail for safety. Please no gum or jewelry (except for stud earrings).
